How to use the soundscape mixer

  1. 1

Start from a preset. The three preset mixes are balanced starting points. Load one, press play, and you already have a usable bedtime soundscape.

  2. 2

Set the noise layer first. Noise is the bed the rest sits on. Choose brown for depth, pink for a rain-like balance, or white for bright masking, then bring it up until it just covers the room.

  3. 3

Add a tone quietly underneath. Healing tones are pure sine waves, so a little goes a long way. Keep the tone layer well below the noise layer — around a third of its level.

  4. 4

Layer rain and ocean to taste. Rain adds texture in the mid range, the ocean swell adds a slow sub-bass pulse. Raise one at a time and stop as soon as the mix feels busy.

  5. 5

Set a sleep timer, then share the mix. Pick 45 to 90 minutes so playback stops after you fall asleep. Share mix copies a link that reopens this page with every slider exactly where you left it.

Why layering works better than one sound

A single noise track masks well but stays flat, and a flat sound is easy for an alert brain to keep listening for. Layering a broadband noise with a slow tone and some organic texture gives the ear enough variation to stop tracking the sound without adding anything sharp enough to wake you.

The order matters more than the count. Set the broadband layer first because it does the actual masking, then add quieter layers on top. Three layers at moderate levels almost always beats five at full volume.
