How to use the frequency matcher

  1. 1

Choose what you came for. Solfeggio tones and binaural beats are for relaxation and sleep. Pitch matching and notch therapy are the two tinnitus modes — start with pitch matching.

  2. 2

Put on headphones and set a low volume. Start near 20% and raise it slowly. A matching tone should sit at the same loudness as your tinnitus, never above it — loud tones can make ringing worse.

  3. 3

Sweep until the tone merges with your ringing. Drag the frequency slider through the range, then use the ±100, ±10 and ±1 Hz buttons to close in. Most tinnitus sits between 4,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz.

  4. 4

Write the frequency down. That number is your tinnitus pitch. Keep it — you will re-enter it whenever you use notch therapy or discuss it with an audiologist.

  5. 5

Switch to notch therapy for daily sessions. Notch therapy plays white noise with your pitch removed. Listen 30 to 60 minutes a day at a comfortable level; research on this approach measures change over months, not days.

How pitch matching and notch therapy work

Tinnitus usually presents as a ring, buzz, or hiss at a fairly specific pitch — for most people somewhere between 4,000 Hz and 8,000 Hz. Pitch matching means sweeping a pure tone until it blends with what you hear, which gives you a number to work from.

Notched sound therapy takes that number and removes a narrow band around it from a broadband noise. Listening regularly is thought to reduce activity in the part of the auditory cortex tuned to that frequency. Studies track change over months of daily sessions, so treat this as a long routine rather than a quick fix.

This tool is for self-experimentation and relaxation. It does not diagnose anything — sudden, one-sided, or pulsing tinnitus should be checked by a doctor or audiologist.
