How to use the binaural beats generator

  1. 1

Put on stereo headphones. Binaural beats do not exist in the air — each ear has to receive its own pitch. Through a speaker, or with one earbud in, the effect disappears entirely.

  2. 2

Pick the state you want. Delta for falling asleep, theta for winding down or meditating, alpha for calm focus, beta for work, gamma for demanding mental tasks.

  3. 3

Lower the carrier frequency at night. The carrier is the base pitch under the beat. Around 100–200 Hz is soft and easy to fall asleep to; higher carriers sound brighter and keep you more alert.

  4. 4

Set the volume just loud enough to hear. The beat is a slow pulse rather than a sound of its own. Quiet playback is enough — turning it up adds fatigue, not effect.

  5. 5

Give it 10 to 20 minutes. Entrainment is gradual, so listen for at least ten minutes with your eyes closed and let your breathing settle rather than checking whether it is working.

How binaural beats work

Play 200 Hz into one ear and 202 Hz into the other and neither ear hears a 2 Hz sound — the brainstem does. It resolves the difference between the two channels as a slow pulse, and that perceived beat is what the technique is named after.

The idea behind entrainment is that neural activity drifts toward the rhythm of a steady stimulus. Evidence is mixed and effects are modest, so treat binaural beats as a relaxation aid that works best alongside a consistent bedtime rather than as a sleep treatment on its own.

Skip binaural beats if you have epilepsy or another seizure disorder, and stop if a session leaves you with a headache or feeling wired.
